ACTION

The amount of money wagered by a player during an entire playing session.

ACTIVE PLAYER

One who is still in the pot.

ANCHOR MAN

The player betting on the last box on the blackjack table and making the final decision, therefore anchoring the game.

ANTE

Usually in poker, a term used for the first money wagered on a hand.

ANY CRAPS

A one-roll dice bet covering the 2, 3, or 12.

ANY SEVEN

A one-roll dice bet covering any 7.


BABIES

Small value cards.

BACCARAT

A card game where the winning hand totals closest to 9 discounting all units of 10. Originating from the game, Chemin de Fer.

BACK LINE

See Don. t Pass Line.

BANKER

In a card game, dealer or the players who books the action of the other bettors at the table.

BANKROLL

The amount of money a player has for one gaming session.

BAR THE 12

Makes the 12 a push on the Don't Pass Bar.

BASE

Area on the dice table where the majority of bets are made and paid.

BASE DEALER

Dice dealer in charge of one of the bases.

BASIC STRATEGY

The mathematically correct way to play any game.

BET

Wager

BETTING LIMITS

In a table game, the minimum and maximum amounts of money that you can wager on one bet. You cannot wager less than the minimum or more than the maximum amount posted.

BETTING RIGHT

Betting on the Pass Line or with the shooter.

BETTING WRONG

Betting on the Don't Pass or against the shooter.

BIG BLIND

The minimum bet on the first round of betting.

BLACK

The most common colour used for $100 chips.

BLACKJACK

A card game where players try to beat the dealer by getting closest to 21 without going over.Two cards with a ten value card and an ace.

BLIND BET

A bet made without looking at your cards.

BLUFF

In poker, players bluff when raising with a weak hand in hopes of driving out players with stronger hands.Tricking the other players into thinking that you have a really good hand.

BOARD

In poker, the community cards dealt face-up in the centre of the table are referred to as on the 'board'.

BOAT

Another term for a full house.

BOOK

To accept a bet.

BOOK PERCENTAGE

This term refers to how much of a profit margin there is in a particular market for a bookmaker.

BOX

Area of the dice table controlled by the boxman.

BOXMAN

The casino employee in charge of the craps table. The boxman sits between the base dealers.

BUG

A joker.

BULLET

An ace.

BUMP

To raise.

BURN CARD

In card games, the card temporarily removed from play. After a shuffle and cut, one card is placed on the bottom of the deck or in the discard tray, which is called burning the card.

BUST

In blackjack,when the player or dealer goes over 21.

BUTTON

In poker, a small plastic disc used as a marker that is moved from player to player after each hand to designate the dealer position.


CALL BET

A bet made verbally.

CARD COUNTING

card counting Keeping track of all cards that have been played since the shuffle.

CARIBBEAN STUD

A five-card poker game with all players playing against the house.

CASINO ADVANTAGE

The edge that the house has over the players.

CHIPS

Round tokens that are used on casino gaming tables in lieu of cash.

CHECK

In casino gambling, a check is another term for a chip. In poker, a player can check in order to stay in the game but not bet.

COLD

A player on a losing streak, or a slot machine that isn't paying out.

COLUMN BET

Placing a chip in one of the boxes at the end of the columns covers all the numbers in that column, a total of twelve. (The zero is not covered by any of the columns).

COLOUR UP/OUT

Exchange smaller denomination chips for larger denomination chips.

COMBINATION WAY TICKET

In keno, a ticket in which groups of numbers are bet several different ways, allowing the player to spread money over more combinations.

COME BET

A wager placed on the Come Line. Same as rules as the Pass Line, but placed after the point has been established.

COME LINE

Area on the craps table where Come Bets are placed.

COME OUT ROLL

The first roll of the dice or the first roll after a point has been made. This roll establishes the point.

COMMUNITY CARDS

Cards which can be used by all the players to make up their best five card poker hand in games such as hold 'em and omaha.

CORNER BET

Place your chips at the corner where four numbers meet. All four numbers are covered.

CRAPS OUT

Rolling a Crap (2, 3, or 12) on the come-out roll.

CRAPS

Dice term for 2, 3, and 12.

CROUPIER

Term mainly used when referring to roulette and baccarat dealers.

CUT

To divide the deck into two parts.

CUT CARD

A hard plastic card used to cut the deck.


DEAD MAN's HAND

Two pair of aces over eights.

DEAL

To give out the cards during a hand.

DEALER

A casino employee who deals the various games.

DESIGNATED DEALER

In poker games like Texas hold'em, the player to the left of the dealer bets first. In a poker room where each game has a resident dealer, a different player serves as the designated dealer for each hand.

DEUCE

A two.

DISCARD RACK/TRAY

Area of the table where the used cards are placed.

DON'T COME BET

A bet placed on the Don't Come Bar. Same rules as the Don't Pass Line, except placed after the come-out roll.

DON'T PASS BET

A wager placed prior to the Come-Out Roll that a seven will be rolled before a point is repeated.

DON'T PASS LINE

The area on the table layout where Don't Pass Bets are placed.

DOOR CARD

In stud poker the fist card that is dealt face up.

DOUBLE DOWN

In blackjack, it is the players option to double their original bet in exchange for receiving only one more card. To do this the player turns over their first two cards and places an equal bet alongside the original bet.

DRAW

In draw poker, the second round of cards that are dealt.Exchanging cards in your hand for cards from the deck.To draw (pull) additional cards.

DRAW BUTTON

In video poker this button allows the player to draw up to five new cards.


EDGE

An advantage over an opponent.

EVEN MONEY

When the player has a blackjack and the dealer has an ace showing, a payout offered before the hole card is checked. Pays 1-1 instead of 3-2.

EXPECTED WIN RATE

A percentage of the total amount of money wagered that you can expect to win or lose over time.


FACE CARDS

The King, Queen, or Jack of each suit.

FAMILY POT

In poker, when everyone at the table decides to enter a pot.

FIFTH STREET

In seven-card stud, the third round of betting is called fifth street because players have five cards. In hold'em , fifth street is the fifth card on board and the final round of betting.

FIRST BASE

The first seat nearest the shoe.

FLOAT

The table bank.

FLOP

In a game of hold'em, the three cards dealt face-up in the centre of the table.

FLUSH

In poker, a hand consisting of five cards of one suit.

FOLD

In poker, when a player declines a bet and drops out of the hand.

FOUL

In pai gow poker, a hand is fouled when the two-card low hand is set higher than the five-card high hand, or when the hands are set with the wrong number of cards. A fouled hand is a losing hand.

FOUR OF A KIND

Four cards of the same rank, also known as quads.

FOURTH STREET

In seven-card stud, the second round of betting is called fourth street because players have four cards. In hold'em, fourth street is the fourth card on board and the third round of betting.

FREAK

A wild card.

FULL HOUSE

In poker, a hand consisting of a three of a kind and a pair.


GREEN

US term for the most common colour used for $25 chips.


HAND

Refers to the cards that you hold, or to everything that happens in a card game between shuffles of the deck.

HARD HAND

In blackjack,a hand that does not have an ace or a hand that cannot use the ace as eleven.

HIT

In blackjack,to take another card.

HOLD EM

A class of poker games.

HOLE CARD

In blackjack, the facedown card that the dealer gets. In stud and hold'em poker, the facedown cards dealt to each player.

HORN BET

A one-roll bet that combines the 2, 3, 11, and 12.

HOUSE EDGE

The percentage of each bet that you make that the house takes in. Winning bets are paid off at less than the true odds to generate income for the house.


INSIDE BETS

A roulette bet placed on any number, or small combination of numbers.

INSIDE STRAIGHT

In poker, four cards of a straight where the straight can only be completed one way.

INSURANCE

A side bet that the dealer has a blackjack. It is offered when the dealer's upcard is an ace. If the dealer has blackjack, the bet is paid 2-1. If the dealer does not, the insurance bet loses.


JACKPOT

A big win used mainly on a slot machine.

JOKER

The 53rd card in a deck, sometimes used as a wild card.


KICKER

In a draw poker game, an odd high card held that doesn't contribute to a straight or a flush, usually an ace or a king.

KNOCK

In draw poker a player may knock on the table to signify that no cards are required.


LIMIT

In poker, any game that has a fixed limit on how much you can bet or raise in each round.

LOOSE

Slot machines are loose when they are paying off and giving the house only a small advantage over the player.


MUCK PILE

The pile of cards from players who have folded.


NATURAL

In blackjack,a ten value card and an ace. In baccarat a natural is a two-card total of eight, or nine.

NUTS

Having a hand in games such as hold 'em and omaha which is the best possible hand and which cannot be beaten by any other player.


OPEN

In poker, the player who bets first.

OPENERS

Cards needed to open a pot,for example,two jacks are needed to open a jackpot.In some games,a minimum hand is needed before an opening bet can be made.In a jackpot,two jacks are needed,for a queen pot-two queens etc.

OUTSIDE BETS

Roulette bets located on the outside part of the layout. They involve betting 12 to 18 numbers at one time.

OVER

Used as a short way of expressing two pair,for example, queens over tens means two queens and two tens.

OVERLAY

A good bet where you have an edge over the casino.


PAIR

Any two cards that have the same rank.

PASS

To not bet, to fold.

PASS-LINE BET

A wager made prior to the come-out roll that a point will repeat.

PASS LINE

The area where a Pass-Line Bet is placed.

PAT

In draw poker, a hand that does not need any more hands. In blackjack, an unbusted hand worth at least 17 points.

PAY CYCLE

A theoretical expression that reflects the number of plays required for the machine to cycle through all possible winning and nonwinning combinations.

PAYLINE

The line on a slot machine window on which the symbols from each reel must line up. Slot machines can have as many as eight paylines, although most have only one.

PAYOFF

Your payback; the return you see on a wager.

PAYOUT PERCENTAGE

Also referred to as the payback percentage, the percent of each dollar played in a video or slot machine that the machine is programmed to return to the player. Payback percentage is 100 percent minus the house edge.

PAYOUT TABLE

A posting somewhere on the front of a slot or video poker machine, that tells you what each winning hand will pay for the number of coins or credits played.

POCKET CARDS

Cards which are dealt face down.

POINT

Dice term for the number rolled on the come-out roll if a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10. The point has to be repeated before a seven rolls for the Pass Line bets to win.

POT

In a poker game, the amount of money that accumulates in the middle of the table as each player antes, bets, and raises. The pot goes to the winner of the hand.

PRESS

To increase the amount being wagered after a win.

PROPOSITION BET

Dice bets on number combinations.

PROGRESSIVES

A slot machine whose potential jackpot increases with each coin that is played. When the progressive jackpot finally hits, the amount resets to the starting number.Carries the potential for huge winnings.

PUSH

When the dealer and the player have hands with the same total. No winner or loser.


QUADS

Four of a kind.


RACK

A plastic container in which you can transport and count large-denominational coins, slot machine tokens, and casino plastic chips.

RAISE

In poker, a player raises by matching the previous bet and then betting more, to increase the stake for remaining players.

RAKE

The money that the casino charges for each hand of poker. It is usually a percentage (5-10%) or flat fee that is taken from the pot after each round of betting.

RANK

The worth of a set of cards.

RED

The most common colour used for $5 chips.

RED-BLACK BET

In roulette, an outside wager on whether the next spin will be a red or a black number. This bet is payed off at even money.

RIVER

In poker, the final card dealt in a hand of stud or hold'em. In seven-card stud, staying in until the fifth and final round of betting is called going to the river.

ROYAL FLUSH

In poker, an ace-high straight flush; the best possible hand.

RUN

Another name for a straight.


SEVEN-OUT

Rolling a seven after the point has been established.

SEVENTH STREET

In seven-card stud, the fifth and final round of betting is called seventh street because players have seven cards.

SHOE

Name given to the box in which the dealer places the freshly shuffled cards. Each hand is then dealt from the shoe.

SHOOTER

The person rolling the dice.

SHOWDOWN

In poker, after the last betting round, the players who remain in the pot must show their hands in the showdown to determine the winner.

SHUFFLE

Before each hand the dealer mixes up the order of the cards.

SINGLETON

In poker, a card that is the only one of its rank.

SIXTH STREET

In seven-card stud, the fourth round of betting is called sixth street because players have six cards.

SOFT HAND

In blackjack a hand that can use the ace as one or eleven.

SPLIT

to make two hands from a pair.

SPLIT BET

Place your chips on the line between any two numbers.

SPOT

Any number from 1 to 80 that a player selects on a keno ticket. It also refers to the number of numbers that are marked on a ticket.

STAKE

The amount of money bet.

STAND

To not draw any more cards.

STICKMAN

The dice dealer who calls the numbers rolled and controls the stick.

STIFF

In blackjack, a hand between twelve through sixteen.

STEAL

In poker, to win the pot by bluffing.

STRADDLE

A method of betting where the previous bet is doubled-the doubling of previous bets usually continues for a pre determined number of times.

STRAIGHT

In poker, a hand consisting of five cards of different suits.

STRAIGHT FLUSH

In poker, a hand consisting of five cards of consecutive ranks of the same suit.

STRAIGHT UP

Place your chips directly on any single number (including zero).

STREET BET

Place your chips at the end of any row of numbers. A street bet covers three numbers.

STUD POKER

Poker game with no draw.

SURRENDER

In blackjack, to give up half your bet for the privilege of not playing out a hand. In roulette, you effectively lose only half on an even-money bet when the ball lands on 0.


THIRD STREET

In seven-card stud, the first round of betting is called third street because the players have three cards.

THREE OF A KIND

In poker, three cards of the same rank.

TOKE

A tip given to the dealer in the form of money or chips.

TREY

A three.

TRIPS

Three cards of the same value.


UNDERLAY

A bad or unfavourable bet.

UPCARD

The dealer’s initial exposed card.


Vig

Vig is short for the word 'vigorish'. Also 'juice' in the US. This can be either; the tax that the house takes (rake) in each hand of poker or the up-front fee.


WHEEL

5,4,3,2,Ace in low poker.

WILD CARD

A joker or other card that can be used as any other card to complete your hand in card games.
